LeClaire Bicycle Safety
Please Be Aware
“Please be aware” can mean so many things. With RAGBRAI coming to our area, this means everyone needs to be more aware of …people riding bicycles.
In the months leading up to the event on July 26, we will see even more cyclists riding the roads that will bring RAGBRAI riders to LeClaire. Some will be experienced riders; others will be beginners that might not know all of the rules of the road and the etiquette of riding a bicycle.
We as cyclists need to: Always ride on the right side of the road with traffic, ride predictably and in a straight line, and always OBEY traffic signs and signals.
We as motorists need to: Always look out for cyclist in your blind spots as you turn in intersections, back out of your driveways, and opening your car doors. When you pass a cyclist or group of cyclists on the road: Slow down and pass when safe, and go into the other lane when passing. DO NOT straddle the centerline, and give plenty of room when changing back into your lane after passing. Please do not honk at the cyclists as that can startle them and cause a crash.
Above all, we need to share the space with each other! We both have a right to the roads, so please be aware.
Thank you,
Donnie Miller
